Rep. Andrew Clyde, a U.S. Congressman who has consistently secured re-election since 2020, posted a series of tweets in early November 2025 criticizing Senate Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown and drawing comparisons to previous political standoffs.
On November 4, 2025, Clyde wrote: “It’s Day 35 of the Schumer Shutdown. Tied for the LONGEST government shutdown in history. Senate Democrats can end the shutdown TODAY when they vote for a 14th time on whether to advance the House-passed clean CR.”
The following day, he referenced past events during another shutdown: “During the 2013 government shutdown, Obama blasted Republicans for doing EXACTLY what Democrats are doing right now. Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries should take note.” This tweet highlights his view that current Democratic leaders are repeating tactics previously criticized by their party.
Later on November 5, Clyde reiterated his position regarding responsibility for the ongoing impasse: “The Schumer Shutdown is now the longest government shutdown in history. All because Democrats are holding the government hostage to appease the radical left-wing base that is taking over their party.”
Andrew Clyde has represented his district through several election cycles, defeating Tambrei Cash in 2024 with nearly 69% of the vote, Michael Ford in 2022 with more than 72%, and Devin Pandy in 2020 with almost 79%. These results underscore his continued electoral support within his constituency.
The term “Schumer Shutdown” used by Clyde refers to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and reflects partisan disagreement over funding legislation. Government shutdowns have historically occurred when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions needed to fund federal operations.
