The Atlanta Falcons have concluded their picks in the 2025 NFL Draft with a notable focus on enhancing their defense. Despite making only five selections, tying with the fewest in franchise history, General Manager Terry Fontenot and Head Coach Raheem Morris are optimistic about the impact the new players will have. “I couldn’t be more pleased with obviously the class and what was available to us and to be able to go out there and get that thing accomplished like that,” Morris remarked. “I can’t say enough positive things about us.”
The Falcons kicked off their draft by selecting Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker with the 15th overall pick. Known for his versatility, Walker is seen as a significant addition to the team’s pass rush. Falcon’s strategy is to use him as a hybrid player in the defense. Walker’s selection was followed by a second first-round pick, James Pearce Jr. from the University of Tennessee. Pearce is noted for his explosiveness and ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks.
In the third round, the Falcons traded up to draft Xavier Watts, a safety from Notre Dame. Coach Morris highlights Watts’ excellent football sense and versatility, which will be assets to the Falcons’ defensive lineup. Filling their fourth-round slot, the Falcons picked Billy Bowman Jr., a defensive back from Oklahoma, recognized for his aggressive play against the run.
Rounding out their selections, the Falcons chose Jack Nelson, an offensive tackle from Wisconsin, in the seventh round. Nelson’s reliability and experience across the offensive line provide depth to the Falcons’ roster.
The focus on defense has been a strategic direction for the Falcons, aiming to bolster their capacity to pressure opponents. This draft’s emphasis showcases their commitment to refining this facet of the team.
