The Atlanta Falcons announced on Mar. 6 the hiring of Bill Callahan as their new offensive line coach, following the recent appointment of Kevin Stefanski as head coach and Ian Cunningham as general manager.

The addition of Callahan is part of a broader effort by Stefanski and Cunningham to strengthen the team’s performance in both offensive and defensive lines. This move aims to make the Falcons a more physical and competitive team in the National Football League’s NFC South division, according to the official website.

Stefanski said at the NFL Combine, “Yeah, I think he’s the best in the business. I’m biased, but if you watch what he’s done over the course of his career, I think the world of Bill.” Callahan brings over four decades of coaching experience, having started his career at the University of Illinois in 1980 and joining the NFL in 1995 with roles ranging from offensive coordinator to head coach. Most recently, he worked with Stefanski for several seasons with Cleveland, where their rushing offense consistently ranked among league leaders despite injuries to key players.

“Bill has already had an immediate impact on our coaching staff,” Stefanski said. “Just wealth of knowledge, and just the experience that he has that he can draw upon when it comes to putting a run game plan together, putting a protection plan together and then ultimately getting the most out of your players.” The Falcons’ offensive line has been a strong point in recent years. All core starters except Elijah Wilkinson are set to return next season, providing continuity for Callahan’s arrival.

Callahan will work with established talents such as right guard Chris Lindstrom—named second-team All-Pro for four consecutive seasons—and left tackle Jake Matthews. Last season, Atlanta averaged more than 125 rushing yards per game and allowed only 26 sacks—the fourth-fewest in the league. “I think one of his superpowers is player development,” Stefanski said. “I’ve seen him take players and turn them into All-Pros.”

The Falcons have twice advanced to the Super Bowl—in 1998 and 2016—and began play as an expansion team in 1965 according to their official website. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia according to their official website, with Freddie the Falcon serving as mascot according to their official website.

Looking ahead, Callahan’s experience is expected to help further develop Atlanta’s offensive line group while building on last season’s successes.
