Congressman Andrew Clyde has introduced the Constitutional Hearing Protection Act (CHPA) in Washington, D.C. The proposed legislation aims to remove taxation, registration, and regulation of suppressors under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
“Burdensome regulations and unconstitutional taxes shouldn’t stand in the way of protecting American gun owners’ hearing,” said Clyde. “As an ardent defender of our Second Amendment liberties, I’m working to remove all infringements on our God-given right to keep and bear arms. By deregulating suppressors, eliminating the costly $200 tax stamp on these firearms, and avoiding additional taxation, my legislation offers a constitutional solution to increase Americans’ access to suppressors. Congress must advance this commonsense measure to preserve our Second Amendment rights and protect the hearing of millions of gun owners.”
The bill has gained support from several original cosponsors including Representatives Nick Begich, Josh Brecheen, Eric Burlison, Eli Crane, Troy Downing, Ron Estes, Brad Finstad, Brandon Gill, Paul Gosar, Andy Harris, Mark Harris, Diana Harshbarger, Kevin Hern, Clay Higgins, Thomas Massie, Tom McClintock John McGuire Mary Miller Barry Moore Ralph Norman Andy Ogles Scott Perry Guy Reschenthaler Michael Rulli Keith Self Lloyd Smucker Greg Steube Marlin Stutzman Claudia Tenney Tony Wied and Ryan Zinke.
Additionally supported by Gun Owners of America (GOA), the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), and the National Rifle Association (NRA), the act seeks legislative progress.
“Gun Owners of America is fully supportive of Rep. Clyde’s Constitutional Hearing Protection Act — which eliminates all unconstitutional excise taxes on firearm suppressors. GOA urges the House Committee on Ways and Means to swiftly advance this legislation to restore the right of the People and protect the hearing of millions of gun owners,” stated Aidan Johnston from GOA.
“The National Association for Gun Rights supports the full deregulation of suppressors as they should be classified just like any other accessory. Congressman Andrew Clyde’s Constitutional Hearing Protection Act would remove suppressors from the NFA’s burdensome regulations and eliminate the egregious $200 tax stamp. These are great first steps. We thank Congressman Clyde for being a leader on this issue and on the Second Amendment,” commented Dudley Brown from NAGR.
John Commerford from NRA-ILA added: “Gun owners should not have to pay a tax ask governmental permission and endure wait times that can be over a year just to protect their hearing while exercising their constitutionally protected rights Suppressors do not silence firearms but they are proven to mitigate hearing damage from shooting On behalf of our millions of members we thank Representative Andrew Clyde for introducing the Constitutional Hearing Protection Act.”
