The Atlanta Falcons have concluded an interview with Matt Eberflus for their open defensive coordinator role. This follows the dismissal of Jimmy Lake earlier in the offseason. Eberflus, previously the head coach of the Chicago Bears, is among seven candidates considered for the position. Other candidates include Jeff Ulbrich, Don “Wink” Martindale, Lou Anarumo, and Steve Wilks.

Eberflus’s most recent role was as head coach of the Bears from 2022 to 2024. He was dismissed after a loss to the Detroit Lions extended Chicago’s losing streak to six games, resulting in a 14-32 record over three seasons. Before his tenure with Chicago, Eberflus served as defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021. During this period, he developed one of the league’s top run defenses and consistently ranked among the top teams in turnovers forced.

Prior to his NFL career, Eberflus was Missouri Tigers’ defensive coordinator from 2001 to 2008. Under his guidance, several players advanced to NFL careers.

Eberflus’s candidacy is bolstered by his history as a successful defensive coordinator despite challenges faced during his head coaching stint with Chicago. His defense with Indianapolis ranked in the top ten for points allowed three times in four seasons.

However, concerns remain about Eberflus’s recent performance with Chicago and potential adjustments required if hired by Atlanta. The Falcons would need to consider changes associated with his preference for a 4-3 front concept amidst evolving nickel defense strategies.
