The Atlanta Falcons were defeated by the Miami Dolphins 34-10 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in their Week 8 matchup. The loss drops the Falcons to a 3-4 record, pushing them below .500 for the second time this season and keeping them third in the NFC South.

Despite being favored on paper with better statistics and a stronger record than Miami, Atlanta struggled to convert opportunities into touchdowns. This issue has been noted by offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who said earlier in the week that the team had already had “two just clunker games.” Sunday marked a third such performance.

A significant moment came during the Falcons’ first red zone trip of the game in the third quarter. A 39-yard defensive pass interference penalty and a 17-yard run by running back Bijan Robinson set up a promising opportunity. However, Robinson fumbled at the 10-yard line on the next play, and Miami recovered, ending Atlanta’s chance to score a touchdown. This was Robinson’s first lost fumble since Week 15 of his rookie season in 2023. His streak of 556 consecutive touches without a lost fumble ties for second longest by a Falcons player since 1991.

The Falcons played without several key starters due to injuries: inside linebacker Divine Deablo (placed on injured reserve with a fractured forearm), quarterback Michael Penix Jr., wide receiver Drake London, edge rusher Jalon Walker, cornerback Billy Bowman Jr., and defensive lineman Zach Harrison. While coaches and players have not used injuries as an excuse, these absences impacted the team’s performance.

Atlanta managed only one rushing yard in the first quarter. Inside linebacker Kaden Elliss broke up a pass for the second consecutive game—his first career streak of this kind—and notched his 14th career game with at least ten tackles as a Falcon. That is the most by any Atlanta player since 2023 and ranks eighth among all NFL players over that period.

Tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. matched his personal best with nine receptions—the most he has recorded in a game since Week 5 of the 2021 season. He is now one of three Falcons tight ends to have multiple games with nine or more catches. Running back Tyler Allgeier scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the season, tying his single-season high from last year.

Safety Jessie Bates III left Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter due to an ankle injury.

Heading into Sunday, there was speculation about whether Michael Penix Jr. or Kirk Cousins would start at quarterback; Penix was ruled inactive before kickoff, so Cousins made his fifteenth start for Atlanta. The Falcons led the NFL in pass defense entering Week 8 but continued to struggle offensively, ranking near the bottom of the league both in points per game and red-zone efficiency.

All fourteen NFL experts surveyed predicted an Atlanta victory over Miami.

The Falcons now prepare for two consecutive road games: against the New England Patriots next Sunday at Gillette Stadium and then facing the Indianapolis Colts on November 9 in Germany.
