Rep. Andrew Clyde (GA-09) and other members of the Georgia Republican Delegation have called on Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, both Democrats from Georgia, to help end the ongoing government shutdown. The group urged the senators to set aside partisan differences and support efforts to reopen federal operations.

House Republicans passed a seven-week continuing resolution (CR) on September 19 in an attempt to keep the government open ahead of the September 30 funding deadline. All Georgia House Republicans supported this measure, which they described as nonpartisan and similar to resolutions adopted under both Republican and Democratic administrations in previous years. Congressional Democrats have also passed CRs multiple times during President Biden’s term.

Despite five Senate votes on the CR, it has not reached the required 60 votes for cloture. Senators Warnock and Ossoff voted against advancing the measure each time, which their Republican colleagues say has kept the government closed.

In a letter sent today, Rep. Clyde and his fellow GOP delegation members highlighted how the shutdown is affecting constituents across Georgia and beyond. “This inaction has real consequences for Georgia families and hardworking Americans. Food assistance, veterans’ benefits, and vital support for women and children have been disrupted, while federal employees and service members now face uncertainty over their paychecks and livelihood.”

The lawmakers also pointed out that farmers are among those most affected by the shutdown: “This shutdown has also left Georgia’s farmers in a precarious position. The Farm Service Agency has halted new farm and commodity loans, which are critical for family farms, particularly during harvest season. Disaster relief payments, which help producers recover from floods, droughts, and other severe weather events, have also been frozen. This compounds the uncertainty faced by our farmers, who are already grappling with unpredictable growing conditions. Our farmers feed America, and they deserve a government that functions as dependably as they do.”

The letter concluded with an appeal to Senators Warnock and Ossoff: “We urge you to stop playing that game and join us in ending this shutdown. The needs of Georgia families and farmers are far too urgent to be caught in the crossfire of partisan gamesmanship. Our duty is to our shared Georgia constituents, and we must act together for their own good.”

Rep. Clyde has maintained strong electoral support in recent years; he won reelection in 2024 against Tambrei Cash with 69% of the vote, after previous victories over Michael Ford in 2022 (72.4%) and Devin Pandy in 2020 (78.6%).
