The Junior Swarm program, operated by the Georgia Swarm, returned this year to offer young athletes a chance to learn box lacrosse. The program included structured practices in Georgia, a media day, and coaching from professionals. Two teams, 13U and 15U, participated in the 2025 NLL Jr. Tournament held in Toronto, where they played against teams from Buffalo, Toronto, Ottawa, and Calgary.

Most players were new to box lacrosse. Despite not securing wins at the tournament, many participants reported that they enjoyed the fast pace and physicality of box lacrosse compared to field lacrosse. They also developed new skills and improved their ability to make decisions under pressure.

Drew Petkoff led the teams during their time in Canada. He said, “The tournament allows kids and parents alike to see some of the best youth box players in the world. By the end, everyone had ‘gut-checked’ themselves and did their best to compete. It was a pleasure to watch their growth. While we still have a lot of growing left to do, this felt like a very successful relaunch of the Jr. Swarm program.”

Players learned about teamwork and how to adapt quickly while competing against strong opponents. The 15U Junior Swarm team received the Team of the Tournament Award for Sportsmanship in recognition of their positive attitude and encouragement of others.

Coaching support came from Drew Petkoff during competition in Canada; Tommy Hixon and Don Hilton ran practices in Georgia; Bryan Cole joined one practice as well. In Toronto, Head Coach Ed Comeau was joined by Assistant Coach Sean Ferris along with Shayne Jackson and Calum Leaver-Preyra.

Reflecting on his experience leading the team, Petkoff said: “It was a pleasure to lead the Jr. Swarm program for the fifth year. Growing up and playing lacrosse near this tournament, being able to share that experience and culture meant a lot to me. It also shows our local Georgia families where we want the program to go. The boys made noticeable improvements over the course of the weekend as they dialed up intensity and adjusted to the fast pace of the game.”

Although there were no victories on paper, coaches noted that players gained confidence and valuable memories from participating in this event.
