Kirk Cousins, the veteran quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, recently addressed the media for the first time since the conclusion of the 2024 season. Cousins spoke about his injury status last year and his future with the team. As mandatory minicamp began, he found himself practicing as a backup to Michael Penix Jr., who took over as starter in the final games of last season.
Cousins admitted that during the 2024 season, he wasn’t as healthy as he thought. “As the season ended last year and I started to get in and work on my body…I felt like I thought I was much better than I was,” Cousins stated. He realized after rehabilitation that his mobility was an issue, not strength.
He also discussed a right shoulder/elbow injury from a game against the New Orleans Saints. Although he didn’t blame all mistakes on this injury, Cousins acknowledged it might have been an inflection point in his performance.
Regarding trade discussions, Cousins confirmed talks with Falcons leadership but noted these have ceased since April. “We are moving forward now,” he said.
Cousins expressed contentment with his current role despite wanting to be a starter elsewhere. “Obviously, you would love to play,” he remarked, focusing instead on supporting his team and potentially winning a championship.
Coach Raheem Morris emphasized no concerns about Cousins’ relationship with Penix. Morris said, “Kirk is not in the business of disrupting Michael Penix.” Cousins echoed this sentiment, expressing support for Penix’s career.
