The Atlanta Falcons kicked off their 2025 offseason program this Tuesday with an unexpected presence. Quarterback Kirk Cousins attended the first day of voluntary workouts, as initially reported by WSB-TV sports director Zach Klein. Falcons General Manager Terry Fontenot confirmed Cousins’ attendance during a pre-draft press conference held on Wednesday.
Addressing Cousins’ participation, Fontenot commented, “I wouldn’t say a surprise, because it is voluntary. These guys put in a lot with what they do, and they deserve time with their families if they decide not to come or to come. So, I wouldn’t say it was a surprise.”
Earlier this month, during the NFL’s Annual League Meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, Falcons Head Coach Raheem Morris expressed his doubts about Cousins attending the voluntary sessions. He stated, “I don’t think he’ll be there. If he is, we’ll welcome him with open arms. But I’m not going to be fool enough to get myself worked up and angry about Kirk Cousins missing voluntary workouts.” Morris also highlighted the ongoing “business-type mode” between the Falcons and Cousins.
The organization has designated Michael Penix Jr. as the starting quarterback for 2025. Despite Cousins’ substantial cap hit, Morris, Fontenot, and team owner Arthur Blank have repeatedly stated their willingness to keep him as Penix’s backup. However, Cousins has communicated his desire to remain an NFL starter.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Falcons are open to trading Cousins, provided he waives his no-trade clause and the right offer comes through. As of Monday, no recent developments have occurred, but with the 2025 NFL Draft happening this weekend, the situation could evolve rapidly.
The Falcons’ upcoming Organized Team Activities are slated for May 27-28 and 30, as well as June 2-3 and 5, with a mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 10-11.
