Today, Congressmen Andrew Clyde and Rich McCormick introduced the Lanier Parks Local Access Act. This legislation aims to allow local partners managing multiple recreation sites at a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) civil works project to use collected user fees across all sites they oversee, instead of restricting the funds to where they were initially collected. Both representatives serve areas that include Lake Lanier.
Lake Lanier, constructed by the USACE in the 1950s, has 76 recreational areas, including parks and campgrounds operated by the Corps and several marinas and islands leased to local entities.
Congressman Clyde stated: “I’ve long fought to protect Lake Lanier, including against misguided efforts to rename the lake as well as recent temporary closures of parks and boat ramps. Expanding local governments’ authority over user fees provides a strong incentive for cities and counties to lease recreational sites from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, therefore ensuring more areas remain open. I’m confident that my legislation offers a simple yet effective solution to help keep Lake Lanier parks open, safe, and well-maintained for residents and visitors alike.”

The USACE has faced challenges keeping all its recreation sites on Lake Lanier open due to staffing shortages. Some parks have recently reopened thanks in part to efforts by Reps. Clyde and McCormick who now seek a permanent legislative solution.
Currently, law permits local governments only use collected fees at their site of origin which poses issues for day-use parks without charges. Consequently, fewer local bodies are inclined towards managing these areas due lacking upkeep funds.
The proposed act addresses this by allowing fee usage flexibility across any park or facility within designated projects thus facilitating sustained access cleanliness safety irrespective if charges apply therein ensuring vibrant public recreation environments.
