According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the older adult population in the U.S. continues to rise as the youth demographic declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, while the number of residents under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s older population has grown considerably in the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study indicates that approximately half of this age group, about 28 million people, could need long-term services and support. The analysis further estimates that over a third may require nursing home services at some point.
