Today, Representative Andrew Clyde of Georgia’s 9th District expressed approval for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) revised proposals addressing safety concerns at Chatuge Dam. The TVA plans to conduct drawdowns of Lake Chatuge during off-season months over a period not exceeding two years, potentially starting in fall 2027.
Clyde stated, “I’m incredibly pleased with the TVA’s decision to reduce drawdown durations from the agency’s previously proposed alternatives, reflecting a solution that prioritizes the economic well-being of Towns County, the structural integrity of Chatuge Dam, and worker safety.” He highlighted his collaboration with constituents, stakeholders, and TVA officials over recent months as instrumental in reaching this outcome.
Clyde further commented on the responsiveness of the TVA to community needs: “Throughout this process, the TVA has been very responsive to and understanding of our local community’s needs and concerns. I’m thankful for their partnership, which has resulted in a sensible path forward that effectively balances the safety of spillway operations and the continued economic prosperity of our North Georgia community.” He also acknowledged local leaders and residents for their involvement in shaping a positive result for Towns County.
Last week included a meeting between Clyde and TVA officials where revised proposals were discussed. This followed a recent study by the TVA identifying vulnerabilities in the 83-year-old dam’s spillway. Although not an emergency situation, these modifications aim to ensure long-term operational safety.
Over recent months, Clyde has been active in advocating for measures that protect both Chatuge Dam’s structural integrity and local economic interests. His efforts included visiting Chatuge Dam in April and leading a request for risk assessment and economic impact analysis related to spillway safety modifications in May.
