On July 28, hours before what was supposed to be a normal heart checkup, Ken and Linda Parkany faced a health scare they couldn’t have anticipated. What Linda thought was minor heartburn actually was sudden cardiac arrest.
Sudden cardiac arrest usually occurs due to a dangerous, abnormal electrical heart rhythm, resulting in a loss of blood flow and consciousness. They are often minor or have no warning symptoms. Without intervention within minutes, cardiac arrest will result in sudden death. Sudden cardiac arrest can be reversible if quickly treated with CPR and an automated external defibrillator, or AED. Because of the life-saving care at Northside Hospital Heart Institute, Linda survived to share her story alongside her husband, Ken. Together, the couple hopes to inspire others to live heart-healthy lifestyles and learn the importance of CPR.
