Yesterday, the United States House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution in support of democracy and human rights in Pakistan. The resolution, H.Res. 901, was introduced by Congressman McCormick of Georgia and Congressman Kildee of Michigan and cosponsored by over 100 colleagues. It underscores the importance of upholding democratic values and respecting the rights of the people of Pakistan as they face economic instability and security threats.

The United States has long maintained a close relationship with Pakistan, collaborating on counter-terrorism efforts and regional stability. However, Pakistan continues to grapple with economic challenges and security threats posed by terrorist groups. Their February 2024 national elections were marred by civil unrest and reports of electoral irregularities.

The near-unanimous passage of this resolution sends a clear message to the government of Pakistan that the United States stands with the people of Pakistan in their pursuit of democracy, free and fair elections, and respect for individual freedoms and human rights. It is crucial that the new government in Pakistan commits to rooting out corruption and promoting democratic values to ensure a stable and prosperous future for all citizens.

"It is encouraging to see the allegations of interference in Pakistan's recent elections being taken seriously," said Congressman McCormick. "It is essential that the new government prioritizes democracy and human rights as they work towards economic stability and security for their country."

Congressman Kildee stated, “I’m pleased that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed our bipartisan resolution to support democracy and human rights in Pakistan,” said Congressman Kildee. “The people of Pakistan deserve free and fair elections, and their human rights and fundamental freedoms must be respected. We must continue working with Pakistan to ensure democracy, human rights, and rule of law are upheld.”

Rep. McCormick thanked his colleague Congressman Kildee for joining him in introducing this resolution and was proud to see it pass with an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 368-7 on the House Floor, sending a clear message that the U.S. House of Representatives stands with the Pakistani people.
