Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rich McCormick (R-GA) and Congressman French Hill (R-AR) introduced a resolution urging the Government of Nigeria to immediately cease the wrongful detainment of Tigran Gambaryan. Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen and former Federal agent, has been detained in Nigeria since February 2024 on charges including tax evasion and money laundering.

"The continued detention of Tigran Gambaryan in Nigeria is a clear violation of his rights, and he is simply being used as a means of extortion by the Nigerian government,” said Congressman McCormick. “We urge Nigeria to immediately release Tigran and provide him with the necessary medical care and due process. The United States Government must do everything in its power to secure the release of Tigran Gambaryan, and all of our citizens wrongfully detained abroad."

Despite the expiration of the court order for his detention and concerns about his health, Gambaryan remains in custody at Kuje Prison. This resolution highlights the need for the Nigerian government to provide full consular access, medical care, and due process rights to Gambaryan.

“After visiting recently with Tigran at Kuje Prison in Nigeria, I noted that his health is deteriorating. I am proud to join my friend and Mr. Gambaryan’s Congressman, Rep. Rich McCormick, in leading this resolution and send a signal to the Nigerian government that he must be immediately granted a released, the remaining charges dropped, and return home to America where he belongs.”

The resolution also expresses sympathy for the Gambaryan family and all other citizens wrongfully detained abroad.

Representatives McCormick and Hill urge the Government of Nigeria to act swiftly in releasing Tigran Gambaryan and ensuring his safety and health during this time.
