Today, Congressman McCormick, along with Congressmen Nehls (R-TX) and Van Orden (R-WI), introduced the STOP the SWAMP Act, a bill to ensure that individuals who refuse to answer certain questions or are convicted of perjury before either branch of Congress are debarred from federal employment. Further, this legislation would allow members from both parties to refer cases of witnesses withholding information from Congress to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The bill aims to hold federal employees accountable for lying or refusing to answer questions before Congress and uphold the integrity of congressional investigations.
In a statement regarding the bill, Congressman McCormick said, "We are the people’s house. As such, we have a crucial duty to oversee the executive branch and hold the bureaucracy accountable for their actions. It is imperative that we maintain transparency and accountability within our government. Individuals who refuse to cooperate with congressional inquiries or commit perjury undermine the trust of the American people and must face consequences for their actions. This bill will ensure that federal employees are held to the highest standards of honesty and integrity."
The bill, if passed, would establish clear consequences for individuals who obstruct congressional investigations or provide false information under oath. By debarring them from federal employment, it aims to deter such behavior and promote a culture of honesty and accountability within the government.
