Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has affirmed Michael Penix Jr. as the team's starting quarterback. Morris stated, "The organization has a quarterback that is certainly bright, that is certainly our future." He expressed confidence in Penix's abilities and potential impact in the NFL.
As the offseason begins, discussions around the Falcons' quarterback situation have included mentions of Kirk Cousins. However, the focus is on Penix and his development. Morris has considered pairing Penix with experienced mentors, such as former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, to guide him through his first full offseason in the league.
Penix, who was the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, joined the Falcons with impressive collegiate achievements. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting, leading his team with 4,903 passing yards and 36 touchdown passes in 2023. Despite plans for Penix to sit during his rookie season, he showcased his skills in the final three games.
The young quarterback's three-game performance highlighted his arm strength, decision-making, and improvisation skills. Although the Falcons' record in those games was 1-2, Penix displayed potential, completing 58% of his passes for 737 yards, along with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He also showed mobility by scoring on a scramble against the Carolina Panthers.
Penix expressed his excitement for the offseason, saying, "I'm definitely going to take stuff from what happened these past three weeks and find ways to get better." With Penix taking the lead, he aims to further develop under the mentorship of experienced players and coaches.
The Falcons faced criticism for drafting Penix after signing Cousins, but Morris remains optimistic about Penix's future. Morris stated, "You've seen nothing but a mature young man that's showing great excellence throughout the course of his stay here."
