WASHINGTON - Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) has introduced a bi-partisan resolution with Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) recognizing India's territorial claim to the disputed Arunachal Pradesh region against aggression by communist China.
"India is the strongest democracy in South Asia and one of America's oldest allies in the region," said Rep. McCormick. "China's constant bullying of its neighbors and incursion into India's historic territory is a threat to the peace and prosperity of millions of people. With this bipartisan resolution, we reaffirm America's partnership with India, our commitment to the patriotic and hardworking Indian-American community, and our stand against tyranny across the world."
"As one of the largest democracies in the world, India is now facing aggression from Communist China. China's ambitions and their abuses are spreading out to Hong Kong, to Xinjiang, to Tibet, to Mongolia, and now to the Arunachal Pradesh region of India," said Rep. Moskowitz. "We are witnessing China's attempt to influence every region of the world. With this bipartisan resolution, we are reaffirming the United States' ongoing bipartisan support to stand by the people of India and stand up to tyrannical rule."
Rep. Rich McCormick has received extensive coverage in India for his foreign policy priorities for the country, including The Times of India, The Daily Prabhat, The Lokmat Times, Asian News International, and News Nine.
- BACKGROUND -
This legislation seeks to recognize the State of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India and supports India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against the PRC’s aggression and strongly opposes China’s unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by declaring Arunachal Pradesh as the Southern part of Tibet. This resolution condemns China’s use of military force to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, including increasing troop deployments, constructing new infrastructure in contested areas, and harassing Indian patrols, which resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers in June of 2020.Based on our shared values and commitment to global peace and prosperity, we wish to reiterate that India is a vital partner to counter China through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue with Japan and Australia, enhancing US strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region, and fostering multilateral cooperation through the I2U2 initiative with Israel and the United Arab Emirates. We seek bipartisan support for India and Indian Americans, with a shared commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the US and India.
