WASHINGTON - Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) has cosponsored a bipartisan resolution reaffirming U.S. opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran and declares support for Israel’s “freedom of action” to stop an Iranian nuclear weapon.
"The brutal Iranian regime oppresses peaceful dissidents and minorities while threatening the United States and Israel," said Rep. McCormick. "They continue to work toward building nuclear weapons, endangering millions of innocent people whom they declare have no right to exist. America and the world cannot risk such weapons falling into the hands of a regime that vows to wipe out its neighbors and the United States."
"In the face of unprecedented nuclear provocations from the Iranian regime, it is vital the United States make clear that a nuclear Iran is unacceptable,” said House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-TX). “I am proud to lead this bipartisan resolution declaring with no ambiguity that Iran must not be able to obtain a nuclear weapon, and that the United States is willing to use all means necessary to prevent a nuclear Iran. Nothing is off the table.”
The resolution is also co-sponsored by Republicans Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Rich McCormick (R-GA), and Democrats Brad Schneider (D-IL), Jared Golden (D-ME), Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Kathy Manning (D-NC).
- BACKGROUND -
The Islamic Republic of Iran continues to enrich and stockpile uranium far in excess of the limits set under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed in May 2023 that Iran is actively enriching uranium to 60% purity.
This January, IAEA investigators discovered uranium particles were found enriched to 83.7% at Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility.
Uranium that is enriched to 90% is weapons-grade material.
