Following Election Day, State Representative Matt Reeves praised the victory of Sugar Hill's homeowner tax relief referendum, acknowledging the community's overwhelming support for the initiative. Reeves, lauding the referendum's success in a press release, highlighted its positive impact on local homeowners, leading to a substantial decrease in property taxes for the area.
In a press release by the Georgia General Assembly, Reeves stated: "Sugar Hill voters sent a clear message that they strongly support the American dream of home ownership in the midst of a housing crisis. I applaud the citizens of Sugar Hill and Gwinnett County for their diligent efforts at the polls. I am proud to see the Georgia General Assembly’s efforts to reduce homeowners’ property taxes in Sugar Hill has proven to be a success, providing much-needed relief to local residents."
Homeowners in Sugar Hill should expect reduced property taxes as the general homestead exemption rises to $10,000 (from $2,000), senior homeowners to $20,000 (from $4,000), and income-tested disabled senior homeowners to $30,000 (from $6,000), according to Georgia General Assembly.
According to Georgia.gov, homestead exemption offers homeowners tax breaks on their property taxes reducing the amount owed on their primary residence. Different types of exemptions exist considering factors such as assessed home value and homeowner age.
Reeves has also worked with a bipartisan coalition of Georgia lawmakers and has introduced a proposal for a countywide homeowner property tax referendum set for May 2024 ballot in Gwinnett County. This will mark area's first such referendum in 35 years said Georgia General Assembly.
Reeves represents District 99 encompassing parts of Gwinnett County. He holds key roles as Vice Chairman of Judiciary Committee and Secretary of Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee with additional service on Judiciary Non-Civil Committee. He was elected to Georgia House Representatives in 2022.
